Habitat for Humanity-Women’s Build

The Habitat for Humanity-Women’s Build program empowers women to build Habitat for Humanity homes, enabling them to positively impact the lives of children by making home ownership a present reality for families. Located in Hall County, it is one of the Habitat for Humanity of Hall County programs. The Women Build program aids Gainesville residents, who are in need of adequate housing, to share in the building experience on a home they will eventually be able to call their own.

The mentorship program for North Georgia’s nursing program is an opportunity for new students in the nursing program to have someone to talk to, get advice from, ask questions, and begin friendships. Second year nursing students are paired with newly accepted students and exchange contact information in order to make the transition into the program an easier one.

This semester we have decided to initiate a mentorship committee in order to plan ahead, and help things run most efficiently within the program. Tiffany Scarbrough and Kelsey Morren will be co-chairing the committee, with our faculty sponsor, Deb Dumphy. We have chosen six committee members that we feel will make a difference for the mentorship program. Those students are Mary Beth Bagley, Katie Belair, Rachael Cohen, Heather Gornes, Jennifer Nicholson, and Natalie Stanek. We are excited to get this committee going and will be having monthly meetings to plan for the future.

As one semester ends and a new fall semester lies ahead, we are starting to make plans for the mentorship program. Our mentors and mentees will make contact over the summer via phone or email, and we plan to have our first “Meet and Greet” August 8, 2009, which is the first Saturday after our first full week of classes in the fall. More information about this event will follow!

We plan to have mentors available to help first year nursing students practice for check-offs, which are very important points in a nursing student’s first semester. We will be providing all mentors with the syllabus schedule so they know when important assignments, tests, and check-offs are scheduled. We are hoping to have a number of events scheduled outside of school for mentors and mentees and for the program as a whole to take time to de-stress with other nursing students!

We are looking forward to a great mentorship program and will announce dates as they are planned in the future!
