USEFUL INFORMATION

www.maa.org

Look at the Horizons Problems, if your solution is published you can win a pat on the back, not $200.00. The Joint Sessions were held in Atlanta this past January. Undergraduate abstracts are usually due in the Fall. Poster Sessions for undergraduate research are also a part of the Joint Session. If you are not a member yet, what are you waiting for. Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. A number of interesting articles can be accessed from this site. Information on conferences too.

If you are interested in doing a summer research project in a science (computer, computational, ...).All of the information you need to apply can be accessed from this site. Both Georgia and Georgia Tech have VIGRE programs in Mathematical Science which promote similar research opportunities for undergraduates.

If you are curious about REU's in the mathematical sciences, these are some examples of REU projects done in the summer of 2004 at Florida State. Students can be given credit for MATH 4900 (Internship in Mathematics (1-3 credit hrs.)) if they successfully complete an REU-like program.

http://www.miktex.org/

This is a version of LaTEX that is compatible with a windows platform. It is free. Pay attention to the samples folder, which come with useful templates and examples which you will need to reference if you intend to use the package effectively. All pictures must be inserted as .eps files. MikTEX is not as convenient as MacKichan's software, but does not cost $250.00 either.

http://www.winedt.com/

This is a nice shell for creating Latex files. You don't have to compile from command line to create .pdf or .ps files. Note: after 3 months you will get recurring pop-up box asking for registration. The shell will continue to operate, but is not as friendly as the first 3 months. The MSRI at Berkeley uses this shell and know one their seemed to care about the recurring registration box. The choice is yours. Registration is $35.00.

Here is an example of a problem solved in Latex. Using Winedt and MikTEX. This solution was not chosen for publication unfortunately in the last MAA Horizon Journal. Perhaps you can be more creative. If you can come up with a more creative way of solving this problem bring it to the next meeting. horizonprob.pdf
