Nursing Students' Association |
Hispanic
Project
The Hispanic Project is designed to introduce Hispanic and minority
middle school children to the many opportunities that Nursing has to
offer. As many of these children are not encouraged or do not feel that
college is a viable option, this project allows learning and exposure to
career options at a stage when life development ideas are beginning.
Nursing students participating in the project have been divided into
three groups. The first group assembled packets containing information
about North Georgia College and State University’s (NGCSU) Nursing and
Military Programs that will be given to the school counselors. The
second group will travel to East Hall Middle and Chestatee Middle School
to talk with the children about NGCSU and the various opportunities that
Nursing and the Military Program have to offer. The third group will
coordinate a visit to bring the children from the two middle schools to
the NGCSU campus. The visit will include activities such as listening
to heart and lung sounds, learning first aid techniques in the Nursing
lab, observing different animals in the Biology lab, identifying
specimens by use of the microscopes, and learning opportunities through
various games. Allowing these children to gain this knowledge through
the Hispanic Project can make a difference in one’s determination and
dedication for learning by instilling hope for further education, a
better life, and lifelong career.
The
ongoing Hispanic Project not only can assist in creating a more diverse
nursing field by enlightenment, but it can also help to make a
difference in the Hall County school system and surrounding communities.
